Five steps to become a faster learner at anything

Executive overview

Most people plateau because they stop at reading and tinkering. Real learning requires moving through five distinct stages — from imagination to teaching.

The only way to fully master a skill is to teach it back.

The five-step learning process

  1. Imagine — Visualise what success looks and feels like. Make it concrete: piano, fitness, business, cooking.
  2. Play around — Read, explore, experiment. This stage builds familiarity but doesn't create real skill.
  3. Apply it — Do the thing for real. Get someone to pay you, perform for an audience, make something happen. This is where learning accelerates.
  4. Get a coach — Find an expert who's already been where you want to go. They compress the path and expose blind spots.
  5. Teach it — Explain it to someone else. Keeps you sharp, documents your process, and forces clarity.
