Stop consuming your life and start directing it
Executive overview
86% of people start their day by scrolling — letting their phone direct their mental state instead of setting their own. The result: they stay stuck in consumer mode, reacting to life rather than shaping it.
The fix is a shift in identity: from passive viewer to director. A director sets intention, visualises the scenes ahead, evaluates behaviour in real time, and commits to a chosen path — not someone else's.
The biggest barrier to implementation is not laziness or lack of skill — it is never having stepped into director mode.
Consumer mode vs director mode
- Consumer mode: phone first, scroll first, let the day happen to you
- Director mode: pre-scene the day on waking, decide who you will show up as
- Ruminating on past mistakes is not directing — it is passive replay
- Judging your own behaviour in real time, then adjusting, is the core skill
- Observer of thoughts (mindfulness) + director of behaviour = full agency
Visualisation as daily practice
- Visualise the scenes of your day before they happen — athletes call it pre-seening
- Include obstacles; visualise overcoming them, not just smooth success
- Write it down each morning: what you will do, how you will show up
- Without this, you default to whatever external stimulus arrives first
- The goal is not fantasy — it is rehearsal that creates momentum
Intention: aligning everything toward your path
- Intention starts with selection — you must choose your path explicitly
- Apply Pareto: 80% of effort, time, and focus on your chosen path
- 20% for other people's needs, other priorities — that is fine and sustainable
- Google's 80/20 rule for employees is the same principle applied at scale
- CEOs of public companies operate on three initiatives per year — no more
- You also only get a few real priorities per year; spread thin means stuck
Why people stay stuck
- Feeling stuck usually means: "I have not honestly committed to my path yet"
- Stuck-in-circulation = spending energy in someone else's priorities, company, or needs
- Collecting the pieces of a path is not the same as claiming it
- Full commitment to a path is the biggest breakthrough available
- You do not have to keep doing it the old way just because that is how you started
