Growing a side business: TikTok live, fear, and accountability

Executive overview

Most side businesses stall not from lack of effort but from misallocated effort — fixing shelves in a store no one visits. The single biggest growth lever right now for small businesses and creators is TikTok live, which actively pushes you to new audiences the longer you stream. Fear of judgment and pointing fingers at circumstances are the two forces that keep people stuck.

If you have no customers, marketing is the only task that matters.

Fear, judgment, and starting before you're ready

  • Fear of judgment is the primary reason people don't start — not lack of equipment, money, or know-how
  • Equipment is an excuse; Gary built Wine Library TV on a $300 camera with no lighting
  • "Winners don't judge because they're busy. Losers judge because they have time."
  • Family members are often the most damaging source of doubt — ignore them specifically
  • Google and YouTube will answer every "I don't know how" question; type the question, get the answer
  • Start anyway; figure it out as you go

TikTok live as the #1 discovery channel

  • TikTok live is the biggest arbitrage opportunity in social media right now
  • Unlike Instagram (pings followers then drops), TikTok pushes live streams to new people the longer you're on
  • The audience grows slowly at first, then compounds — this is the algorithm working correctly
  • Even one hour a day of TikTok live produces one hour's worth of results; more time = more results
  • Twitch is harder — it doesn't offer the same organic discovery; TikTok first
  • Post on TikTok live, Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest; four to 20 content pieces a day if possible

Side business reality check

  • A two-year-old business is a baby; expecting it to fund your life at two years is unrealistic
  • If you're burned out at your day job, consider whether it's the role or just the specific employer
  • Athletes don't retire when they hate their coach; they wait out the contract and find a better team
  • The correct use of evening hours (six to midnight) for a side business is marketing, not admin
  • Posting "only during the holidays" while working three hours a night is the gym equivalent of walking on a treadmill and watching Netflix

Accountability and dwelling

  • Dwelling is irrational — there is no time machine; being upset about yesterday ruins today
  • Pointing fingers (boss, economy, platform, family) is a substitute for accountability
  • Adjust and reallocate: if you've been neglecting family, fix it tomorrow, not someday
  • Self-esteem and humility are not opposites; you can have unlimited confidence and still be humble
  • Humility comes from not needing outside validation — from either praise or criticism

Reaching Gen Z without social media

  • There is no viable path to Gen Z that doesn't run through social media — Gen Z uses TikTok even for search
  • If an organisation blocks social, the honest move is to keep communicating that the constraint makes the goal impossible, collect the paycheck for stability, and build your own thing when the time is right
  • Don't play a fake game pretending there's a workaround when there isn't one

On holding empathy without burning out

  • Empaths who absorb other people's problems all day need an outlet
  • Recommended approach: a nightly one-to-two-minute video ("Dumping the Bucket") recapping observations without real names — gets it off your chest and builds an audience simultaneously
  • The three qualities worth prioritising in people: empathy, optimism, accountability

On parenting and kids creating content

  • Child public exposure has historical precedent of poor outcomes; it's highly individual
  • The danger is not negative comments but positive ones — kids who get addicted to praise become fragile
  • Parents must teach children to be indifferent to both positive and negative external feedback
  • A confident child with strong self-esteem can handle early public exposure; most cannot
