Mobile optimization: conquering the mobile SERPs
Executive overview
Most websites lose mobile rankings by ignoring design, speed, and content structure as separate levers. The DSC framework — dope design, super speed, and contagious content — addresses each in sequence.
Use competitor analysis tools to benchmark mobile performance, PageSpeed to diagnose speed gaps, and real mobile browsing to reverse-engineer high-ranking content layouts.
A site that isn't optimized for mobile is forgettable by design.
Dope design
- Audit your site with SEMrush Site Audit using the Google bot user agent (useful if SEMrush is blocked on a site)
- Use SEMrush Organic Research to see which competitor pages rank on mobile and for what keywords
- Use the SEO Content Template filtered to mobile/phone to see what top-ranking mobile pages look like for your target keywords
- Analyze competitor mobile design: look for layout patterns, not just aesthetics
Super speed
- Run your site through Google PageSpeed Insights — always check the mobile tab separately from desktop
- Search "Google PageSpeed Mobile alternative" to find additional testing tools
- Identify Core Web Vitals failures and pass them to your dev team as prioritized fixes
- Mobile and desktop scores often diverge — treat them as separate problems
Contagious content
- Manually browse top-ranking pages in your niche on a real mobile device
- Note structural choices: short sentences, clear paragraph breaks, easy scrollability
- Look for mobile-specific UI patterns: carousels instead of static tables of contents, anchor-jump navigation
- Ensure images are visibly optimized for mobile viewports
- Ask whether the content feels shareable — that's the signal for "contagious"
