From mobile fiction startup to IP blockchain: SY Lee's nine-year founder journey

Executive overview

Most startups look like overnight successes but mask years of stagnation. SY Lee spent nine years building through two companies — Byline and Radish — before a $500M exit to Kakao gave him the resources and conviction to tackle a bigger problem.

The core insight: AI is simultaneously empowering creators and threatening their IP. Story is building a programmable IP layer on blockchain to let creators protect, license, and remix their work — turning the internet into an "IP Lego land."

Staying in the stagnant phase long enough to reach the inflection point is the hardest, most underrated skill in startups.

The long road through Byline and Radish

  • Byline was a crowdfunded journalism platform built to replace the collapsing ad-driven news model — it never reached scale.
  • With weeks of cash left, SY pivoted to Radish: a mobile serialized fiction platform modelled on Korean webtoon and web novel habits.
  • He moved from London to Silicon Valley, raised from Greylock and others, and hit $10k/month — then stalled for three to four more years.
  • A promised $5M funding round fell apart weeks before close; he signed 20–25 convertible debt instruments to stay alive.
  • At the worst point he took personal loans and borrowed from family and a close friend — roughly $250k — to keep payroll going.
  • After raising $7–8M in total, the business finally hit an inflection point and was acquired by Kakao for ~$500M in 2020.

Why the exit felt incomplete

  • Radish was profitable in a niche — mobile romance serialized fiction — but was burning marketing dollars fighting a zero-sum attention war against larger platforms.
  • Scaling required joining forces with a bigger content and marketing budget; the standalone path wasn't working.
  • The outcome was good for shareholders but didn't feel transformative — SY had abandoned the original mission of fixing media and journalism.
  • After the exit he felt the window to build something truly disruptive was narrowing; "prime time" for a founder is early-to-mid 20s, 30 at the latest.

The problem Story is solving

  • AI tools now let anyone generate high-quality content — everyone is becoming a "content studio," not just a creator.
  • At the same time, large AI models scrape and train on content without consent, hijacking traffic and future revenue from the original creators.
  • Story is building a programmable IP layer on blockchain: a registry where IP can be tracked, licensed, and fairly compensated automatically.
  • 400+ builders are already developing on top of the ecosystem.
  • The company raised at a $2B valuation after previously raising $140M.

Offensive and defensive vision for IP

  • Defensive goal: help creators protect IP and receive fair compensation in the AI era.
  • Offensive goal: turn IP into composable building blocks — "IP Legos" — that any creator can remix while attribution and payment flow automatically.
  • Combining AI generation with an open, programmable IP layer could trigger a "digital renaissance" of creativity.
  • The long-term bet is that permissioned, composable IP unlocks exponentially more value than locked, siloed content ever could.

Mindset lessons from nine years of building

  • Expect the stagnant phase to last years; not knowing when it ends is the real test.
  • Short-term and mid-term: be pessimistic. Long-term: be optimistic — only that optimism sustains you.
  • Progress is not always visible in metrics; track qualitative improvement — better team, better strategy, sharper product thinking.
  • Keep a list of things still worth trying; the belief that "the next thing might work" is what bridges the gap.
  • When the inflection point finally arrives, hold on hard — you've waited too long to let it slip.
  • Until money hits the bank, it is not a funding round.
