How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT in AI search

Executive overview

Nearly 1 in 4 ChatGPT conversations are information-seeking — people researching products and deciding what to buy. Both ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews now surface 2–3 sources at the top, replacing the traditional list of 10 blue links. Businesses not in those answers are invisible.

ChatGPT favours industry publications, review aggregator sites, and community discussions. It actively avoids promotional content.

Trustworthy, research-driven content across multiple authoritative platforms determines who gets recommended — not marketing budget.

What ChatGPT cites and why

  • Industry publications with comprehensive comparisons (e.g. TechRadar, Forbes, Zapier)
  • Review aggregators (G2, Capterra, Trustpilot) — structured data on ratings, pricing, features
  • Community threads (Reddit, Stack Overflow) where specific questions get detailed, reasoned answers
  • Sources that cite other credible sources rank higher
  • Promotional content, thin affiliate articles, and obvious marketing copy are filtered out

Step 1: create research-focused content

  • Target exact queries people ask ChatGPT: "best X for Y with Z budget", "X vs Y for Z use case"
  • Open with a direct answer, then support with a comparison table (pricing, features, best-fit, limitations)
  • Explain your evaluation methodology — this builds trust with AI and human readers
  • Link to user reviews, case studies, and third-party evaluations as evidence
  • Structure like a research report, not a blog post

Step 2: build authority across multiple platforms

  • Pitch articles to industry publications relevant to your sector
  • Keep profiles on G2, Capterra, and directories complete, current, and feature-detailed
  • Aim to be the source that multiple authoritative platforms reference
  • Consistent information across trusted sources significantly increases citation likelihood

Step 3: technical implementation

  • robots.txt — confirm you are not blocking ChatGPTbot or OAI-SearchBot (many sites block these unintentionally via Cloudflare settings active since July 2025)
  • Schema markup — add Organization and Product schema so AI knows exactly who you are and what you sell, rather than guessing
  • Machine-readable fact files — create a facts.json or structured data page with pricing, features, target customers, and competitive differentiators
  • Content freshness — add last-updated dates, maintain a changelog, and regularly refresh top pages; AI deprioritises stale content
