How to cascade priorities across your organisation
Executive overview
Setting company priorities means nothing if the rest of the organisation isn't aligned to them. Each person or department needs their own priorities that explicitly tie back to the top company ones.
Aim for 3–5 company priorities per quarter, always with a clear number one. Then ask every team member — at least to supervisory level — what they need to do this quarter to support those priorities.
Cascading priorities turns individual work into collective momentum.
Building the cascade
- Share company priorities with owners named for each one
- Ask each person: what do you need to do this quarter to support these?
- Negotiate and agree 3 individual priorities, with a clear number one
- Name the link — each personal priority should reference the company priority it supports
- A few unrelated personal priorities are fine, as long as the main ones tie up
Making it stick
- Build dashboards or displays so priorities are visible
- Embed them in your regular meeting rhythm and agenda
- Track and follow up consistently — brief, regular attention compounds
- People who see how their work ties to company goals stay aligned and engaged
