Four audience-building strategies before any product launch
Executive overview
The size of a market is irrelevant — what matters is the number of people paying attention to you specifically. An audience is people who have actively signalled interest, not anonymous viewers. Before launching anything, build an audience using one or more of four low-cost methods.
Target an audience 10–20x your desired sales number before launch.
The four audience-building methods
- Waiting list — tell people something is coming and invite them to register for updates
- WhatsApp or Facebook group — share a link or QR code; works for any niche interest
- Event — a live meetup, Zoom session, or community event where people show up
- Survey, quiz, or scorecard — best option; collects 20–30 data points per person rather than just a name
Why surveys and scorecards win
- Other methods confirm interest but reveal nothing about the person
- A quiz or scorecard captures price sensitivity, desired features, and the specific problem being solved
- Richer data makes targeting, product design, and outreach far more effective
Sizing your audience
- Want 10 sales? Build an audience of 100–200 people first
- Want 30 sales? You need 300–600 in your audience
- Three people in a WhatsApp group is not an audience — start over
Converting the audience
- Once you have 100+ people, send personal DMs or emails to individual members
- Ask for a short Zoom call or in-person meeting to understand their problem
- Offer a discount on the product in exchange for their input
- No ad spend required; use DMs, emails, and group comments to grow organically
