How to optimise content for featured snippets and SERP features
Executive overview
Most websites ignore the structured placements that dominate the top of Google search results. Winning these spots requires understanding which SERP features exist and how to reverse-engineer what already ranks in them.
Google surfaces many feature types — local packs, knowledge panels, featured snippets, video carousels, related questions — each requiring a different optimisation approach. The right research tool reveals which features appear for any keyword.
Treat SERP features as product labels: without them, your site is invisible in the supermarket.
Types of SERP features and what triggers them
- Local pack — driven by Google Business Profile completeness, keyword relevance, and volume of positive reviews with responses
- Knowledge panel — built by establishing a presence across authoritative public profiles (LinkedIn, Twitter, Crunchbase, Wikipedia alternatives, YouTube, Amazon, company registrations)
- Featured snippet — typically triggered by question-format content (how, why, where, what)
- Video carousel — requires video content indexed against relevant queries
- Related questions / People Also Ask — question-based content that directly answers common queries
- Shopping results, image packs, recipes, site links — category-specific; appear based on structured data and content type
Optimising for local pack rankings
- Keep Google Business Profile fully completed with accurate, keyword-relevant information
- Accumulate a consistent stream of positive reviews
- Respond to negative reviews promptly
- Compare your listing against top-ranking competitors to identify gaps
Getting into knowledge panels
- Identify which platforms already appear on page one and two for a target personal or brand name
- Create and maintain profiles on those platforms: LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Crunchbase, WikiAlpha, Facebook, Amazon author page
- Reverse-engineer an existing knowledge panel holder to see exactly which sources Google is pulling from
Using Semrush Keyword Magic Tool to target SERP features
- Run a seed keyword query (e.g. "carpet cleaner") and filter to question-based keywords
- Question keywords perform well across featured snippets, People Also Ask, instant answers, and FAQs
- Use Advanced Filters to isolate keywords that trigger a specific SERP feature (e.g. video carousel, featured snippet)
- Switch database to your target country before finalising keyword selection
- Validate findings by searching the keyword in Google to confirm the feature appears in live results
