Building a healthcare benefits data platform from scratch

Half of U.S. healthcare is funded by private employers, yet the software helping them manage it hadn't improved in 15–20 years. Grant Gordon co-founded Artemis Health to fix that — building a data platform that lets employers understand what's working in their health benefits.

It took two and a half years to close the first customers. Growth came from genuine relationship-building, not aggressive sales.

Product market fit only exists when customers are dragging you into the market — not when you believe you're ready.

Solving the chicken-and-egg data problem

  • Analytics software needs data, but no one shares data before a product is proven
  • Early MVP was a sophisticated clickable prototype, not a live system

Why customers switched from incumbents

  • Competitors integrated only three data sets; Artemis connected many more

  • Artemis let benefits managers get answers themselves, instantly
  • Speed advantage wasn't incremental — it was weeks faster, not percentages

The acquisition by Nomi Health

  • Seven to eight years in, inbound acquisition interest began
  • Decision driven by pandemic impact, growth ambitions, and capital access
  • Nomi had complementary products and government customer relationships
  • No employees lost their jobs; all received equity in the combined company
  • Gordon remained CEO of Artemis as a wholly owned subsidiary

Culture as the only lever at scale

  • As the company grew, improving culture became the primary leadership tool
  • Spent a year observing who embodied the company at its best, then reverse-engineered their behaviour
  • Core values centre on empathy ("wear other people's shoes") and elevating colleagues ("make heroes out of the people around you")
  • Values were codified to guide hiring and promotion, not just stated
