Why talking to your AI beats typing for most tasks

Executive overview

Most people interact with their computers and AI tools almost entirely by typing, despite voice being roughly three times faster. Talking bypasses the analytical "prefrontal interference" that slows and second-guesses typed output, letting ideas flow more freely. A practical split: use voice for ideation, instructions, and quick inputs; use typing for editing, precision work, and structured tasks.

The right voice workflow — dictation for drafts, advanced voice mode for dialogue — can eliminate most of the friction that keeps people typing by default.

When to talk versus when to type

  • Voice is faster: ~140 words per minute speaking vs. ~40 effective words per minute typing (after errors)
  • Talking disables prefrontal interference — ideas surface before the analytical brain edits them
  • Best for voice: ideation, exploratory thinking, emotional or personal writing, giving instructions, small inputs (renaming files, labelling documents)
  • Best for typing: editing existing work, precision or logical structure, presentation design, anything requiring fine control
  • A strong hybrid: draft by voice, refine by typing

Dictation mode vs. advanced voice mode

  • Dictation mode: transcribes speech to text in place; available on most AI tools via a microphone icon; best for brain dumps and first drafts
  • Advanced voice mode: two-way spoken conversation with AI (waveform icon); best for ideation and problem-solving dialogue; not available on all platforms
  • Dictation captures ums and errs; advanced voice mode is conversational and does not write output to screen by default

Recommended tools

  • Wispr Flow (WISPR Flow): top recommendation for dictation accuracy and usefulness; auto-removes filler words, auto-punctuates, auto-formats numbered or bulleted lists, corrects on the fly; works inside any app via keyboard shortcut — no copy-paste required; minor issue: occasional American spelling
  • MacWhisper: free option (with paid tier); not as polished as Wispr Flow but strong value for zero cost
  • Brainier: Windows alternative (untested by hosts)
  • Local models available for privacy-sensitive use cases — voice stays on-device
  • Some tools support audio file upload for transcription (e.g. voice memos)
