How to run effective daily team huddles

Executive overview

Daily huddles are the highest-leverage recurring meeting a team can run. Done right, they take under 10 minutes, build psychological safety, and anchor day-to-day work to long-term strategy.

The daily huddle works because brevity, standing, and structure force honesty and forward momentum.

Huddle format and structure

  1. Keep it short — start after people have settled, not at the very start of the day
  2. Everyone stands (or "daily stand-up") — standing keeps contributions brief
  3. One-word open — name how you're feeling to transition into the meeting authentically
  4. Reflect on a company value, purpose, or BHAG in under two minutes
  5. Round of good news — surface wins and progress before diving into problems
  6. Daily KPIs only — numbers that change every day (bookings, shipping, availability); skip anything that doesn't move daily
  7. Top priority for the day — be specific, not a throwaway; let the team hear what's really happening
  8. One-word close — bookend the meeting sharply; take any dialogue offline immediately
