How Onnit uses clinical trials to validate its supplements
Executive overview
Most supplement companies hide negative results behind attorney-client privilege. Onnit took the opposite approach: submitting products to independent organisations with peer-reviewed, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials.
The result is a product line backed by published science — including cases where the science forced them to drop a major marketing claim.
If you believe in your product, let independent science test it — and publish whatever comes back.
Building credibility through independent testing
- Double-blind, placebo-controlled trials are the credibility standard; attorney-client privilege is the avoidance mechanism
- Boston Center for Memory had published 14 consecutive negative results before testing AlphaBrain — that track record is what makes a positive result meaningful
- Peer-reviewed studies protect against accusations of paid bias; the agency's reputation is on the line too
- Two clinical trials confirmed AlphaBrain improves cognitive sharpness without stimulants, at the neurotransmitter level
Changing claims when the science doesn't support them
- T+ (now "Strength and Performance") showed strength gains in FSU rugby players but no testosterone boost
- The negative feedback loop in healthy young men with normal testosterone explained the null result
- Onnit dropped the testosterone claim, renamed the product, and accepted the sales hit
- The honest labelling more accurately reflects what the science actually showed
FDA, drugs, and supplements
- FDA regulation applies to drugs, which must treat a medical condition — supplements don't qualify
- Onnit's goal is performance improvement in healthy people, not treatment of disease
- AlphaBrain trial participants were healthy, above-average IQ individuals who simply performed better after taking it
