History as both pattern and anomaly

• Marcus Aurelius identified a rhythm to history; a healthy mind prepares for anything.
• Seneca: the only inexcusable thing a leader can say is "I didn't think that could happen."

• No one possesses the past or the future — the present moment is all anyone has.
