Gratitude is not passive appreciation. Imagining the loss of what you have reveals its true value and dissolves the craving for what you don't.

The cure for envy is to notice that others crave what you already have.

Courage over compromise

• Seneca and Cicero justified their compromises as necessary to preserve influence — most of us face no such genuine dilemma
• Marcus Aurelius' instruction was simpler: be good, speak truth without hesitation
• Rome needed Thraseas, Catos, and Helvidius — unbending people who did what was right, not what was expedient

Counting your blessings

• Marcus Aurelius: count what you actually have, then imagine how much you'd want it if it were gone
• The same objects others envy in us, we often overlook entirely — that asymmetry reveals the irrationality of craving
• Seneca: everything needed for well-being is already present; luxury is gathered at the cost of misery
• Epictetus: gratitude requires seeing clearly, and seeing clearly requires gratitude — neither works without the other
• Gratitude extends beyond possessions — it includes the experiences, parents, and circumstances that shaped you
• You cannot pick and choose selectively from your past; all of it made you who you are
• Amor Fati: accepting everything fate assigned, not just the pleasant parts, is the full Stoic practice
