How to find and steal Google featured snippets
Executive overview
Featured snippets appear above organic results and capture ~8% of clicks for a query. Owning them means more traffic without ranking higher. Three tactics cover the full opportunity: optimising snippets you already own, stealing snippets where you already rank top 10, and mining competitors for new targets.
Winning a featured snippet is often a formatting fix, not a content overhaul.
Optimise snippets you already own
- In Ahrefs Site Explorer, open the organic keywords report for your domain.
- Filter by SERP features → Featured snippet → Target domain must be featured.
- Review each snippet in Google: check for rogue HTML, truncated steps, or unhelpful headlines.
- Fix by removing plain-text duplicates inside list HTML, shortening wordy steps, and writing a descriptive heading.
Steal snippets where you rank in the top 10
- In the organic keywords report, filter SERP features → Featured snippet → All features, then add a positions filter for 1–10.
- This shows all queries where you rank top 10 and a snippet exists — but you don't necessarily own it.
- Export results to CSV; use the Ahrefs Google Sheet tool (linked in the blog post) to isolate snippets owned by competitors.
- Optimise those pages to match the snippet format — structure, length, and heading wording all matter.
Mine competitor sites for new snippet targets
- Go to Keywords Explorer, enter a seed keyword (e.g. "vegan"), select Phrase match, then filter for Featured snippet.
- Identify which site owns a snippet you want; enter that domain into Site Explorer.
- Filter its organic keywords report for all featured snippets, then add a traffic threshold (e.g. 1,000+) to make the list workable.
- Apply the same approach to high-authority generalist sites like Quora: filter by niche keyword, then add a snippet filter to surface relevant targets.
