How to learn any skill faster with a structured approach
Executive overview
Most people wing new skills — no structure, no feedback, no accountability. Learning transfers across domains: what you build learning Hebrew or flying applies directly to leadership and business.
Start with a strong why, take full ownership of the process, and use deliberate practice rather than just playing.
The gap between experts and amateurs is structured repetition, not raw talent.
The two foundations
- Anchor every skill to a personal why — write it somewhere visible
- Own your learning entirely; don't accept whatever a teacher or system hands you
- Decide your goal or outcome upfront; it's subjective, make it yours
Finding shortcuts through others
- Seek someone who has already reached your destination
- Get regular access to their advice — bi-weekly beats occasional
- Most problems you face have already been solved; you are not unique
Studying deliberately
- Block fixed calendar time for study — one hour per week compounds fast
- Take notes with the intent to apply, not just absorb
- Ask for feedback at the end of every session or meeting
- Write down recurring feedback and track it
Practicing versus playing
- Studying and playing are not the same as practicing
- Isolate and drill specific weaknesses — the backhand, the meeting structure, the schedule
- When playing, play; when practicing, practice one component at a time
- Confidence comes from time on the court, not from watching
Mixing up your learning methods
- Use multiple formats: structured course + audio + live practice
- If one approach stalls progress, swap it out — the teacher, the platform, the format
- Variety surfaces which combination actually works for you
Patience and accountability
- Expect plateaus; they are a normal part of mastery, not failure
- Commit to at least one year before judging results
- Have someone hold you accountable on a regular cadence
- Make it enjoyable — if there is no reward, motivation will not last
