GWC: the three criteria for putting people in the right seat
Executive overview
Most people problems come down to one thing: someone is in a seat they shouldn't be in. The GWC framework gives you a simple three-part test to evaluate any person in any role.
All three criteria must be a "yes." A gap in any one of them is a problem — but not all gaps are equal.
The three GWC criteria
- Get it — natural intuition for the role; when the job is explained, everything clicks
- Want it — intrinsic motivation to do the job; no amount of money creates this
- Capacity — the education, experience, time, and emotional bandwidth to do it well
How to act on a GWC gap
- Capacity gap only: be patient; give the person 1–3 years to build skills and experience
- Get it or want it gap: these are deal killers — the person will never develop either
- When someone doesn't get it or want it, release them; they may thrive elsewhere
